Ernst Schneider Bio and Artist Statement
Award winning chainsaw artist and sculptor Ernst Schneider, was born in Switzerland in 1955 and emigrated to Perth with Barbara in 1990. He enjoyed a successful career teaching Materials Design and Technology prior to retirement from full time teaching in 2022. Ernst continues to encourage and inspire the next generation of WA artists having jointly coordinated the WA Schools Surrealism and Fantasy Competition, MINDSCAPE, that is exhibiting in Westralia Square until 11. October. In 2024 and 2025, Ernst curated the 3D / Sculpture section of the WASA Annual Exhibition. Previously he was a member of CASM (Contemporary Australian Surrealists Movement) 2014-2022.Of his work, Ernst says, “I’m most passionate about chainsaw carving and sculpting and have been involved with the two since 2010. I believe that artistic creativity is an innate character trait rather than an acquired skill. I’ve always loved the experience of losing myself in thought and diving into the world of art and imagination. This creative introspection allows me to produce a niche art that is not only aesthetically beautiful, but one-of-a-kind. Throughout my career, I’ve accumulated a repertoire of artistic techniques that have allowed me to better illustrate my intentions as an artist. My aim is to create unforgettable works and impart a deep emotional connection between objects and human beings whenever I begin a new piece. As a result, most of my work conveys the synthesis between the figurative and the abstract, the real and imaginary.” [I believe that my constant exposure to new ideas and three-dimensional types of art is what has allowed me to develop into the artist I am today. I am a passionate artist, and my ultimate aim is to focus on the quality of my work rather than the quantity of it and impart a small piece of myself as an artist into each and every one of my creations. I also embrace the Japanese Wabi-sabi philosophy, a state of mind, a way of being. It’s the subtle art of being at peace with yourself and your surroundings. It is a concept which could be explained briefly as being the expression of beauty through imperfection and simplicity. Wabi-sabi in Art is not a style defined by superficial appearance. By almost entirely using recycled materials it is a way of creating an aesthetic ideal, a quiet and sensitive state of mind, attainable by learning to see the invisible, paring away what is unnecessary, and knowing where to stop.]
Ernst has shared his wealth of experience and knowledge in a Presentation entitled “An Introduction to Sculpture” at the Wanneroo Joondalup Art Society General Meeting on 18. June , at the West Australian Society of Art General Meeting on the 17. October and at the North Coast Art Club AGM on 4. May 2025.
